# Voicemail detection

> When your agent's call goes to voicemail, it leaves your message and hangs up, instead of talking to a machine.

When your agent calls someone and gets their voicemail, you don't want it chatting to a recording. With voicemail detection on, the agent waits a moment to tell whether a person or a machine answered:

* **A person answers:** the agent starts the conversation as usual.
* **Voicemail answers:** the agent waits for the beep, leaves your message once, and hangs up.

This is for calls your agent **makes**. Calls to your numbers are answered by the agent, so there's no voicemail involved.

## Turn it on

**1. Open the agent's Voice step**

Open your agent and go to **Voice**, then its call settings.

**2. Switch on Leave a voicemail message**

Then write the message, in the words you'd want to hear. Keep it short:

```text theme={"dark"}
Hi, it's Bright Smile Dental calling about your appointment on Saturday.
Please call us back on 04 123 4567. Thank you!
```

**3. Publish**

Click **Publish changes**. From now on, every call this agent makes checks for voicemail first.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The agent needs a message before you can turn this on. Waiting to hear who answered adds a short pause at the start of outbound calls, which is normal.

## See which calls hit voicemail

Calls that reached voicemail are marked on their call page, and you can filter for them in **Calls**. If you use [webhooks](https://docs.kallabot.com/guides/webhooks.md), each one also sends a `call.voicemail.detected` event, handy for trying again later or sending a WhatsApp instead.
